silent participation - valu

I would like to respond to comments regarding silent participants (I prefer
this term to lurkers). I have recently heard from several PIs who have been
active readers but have chosen not to post. In many cases these participants
have gotton much out of the discussion and have shared information with
colleagues. In some cases these readers have made personal contact with
people who have posted. Clearly, it is important to post ideas or there would
be little to share. However, the value that people have gotten from the list
often extends to offline conversations. We are very interested in finding out
how these conversations are of value to all participants, both those that
post and those that do not. Of course, it goes without saying, there is a
value in the entire community of PIs who are currently participating (119 PIs
at last count) whether or not they are actively posting.

Presumably, there is a list of all those who are signed on to this TEECH
listserver and that would be an appropriate list for the NSF and Dr. Hamner.

Participation should not be the criterion, since many "lurkers" simply didn't

have the time (as we have learned in recent communiques) to participate (or
feel
the necessity to clutter the e-waves with redundant stuff).
