The great trick of calculus was to realise that you could study motion by
paying attention to what did NOT change.  Without this view physics would be
nowhere.  It is a view that loses somethings and it is not suitable for all
situations.  But it is also a very powerful view.  Standards can be the
points of reference through which we notice change and growth.  Without such
points of reference the growth itself cannot be detected.  Thus I would argue
that we need standards for jus the reasons Kathleen finds them problematic
and I would also agree with Kathleen that they are problematic (and therefore
very interesting).

The problem that I see with standards is that they are often associated 
with certitude and rightness (like evaluation).  Those of us who think 
about education within a developmentalf and transformative framework need 
to think about "standards" that honor indeterminacy, shifting 
relationships, varying interpretations, alternatives, and the like.  This 
is hard to capture in the notion of standards.
