I have had similar experiences to Kathleen's. In some sense the evaluation
is built into the process. The teachers are constantly evaluating
(reflecting on) your practice and their practice. This does not normally
produce numbers or AERA papers but it does establish a kind of internal
quality control. It also means that some of what we used to pay grad
students or ourselves to do is now handled by the teachers. It is not very
helpful for on-campus empire building but it does advance education.

I agree with Jack that we know much more about learning (I'm not sure
about teaching) than we do about how to create the conditions in the
classroom to support children's learning. We have found it very
difficult to create those conditions in classrooms without first creating
them in our learning lab,examining them and talking about them at length
with teachers, then encouraging the teachers to take a "slice" of that
environment into the classroom in the form of what we call a
"kid-watching environment" and then further discussing that experience.
The process involves teachers watching the actions we take, reflecting
with on on those actions, taking some action themselves, and then
reflecting with us on that action.
