Abstracts of NSF Awards for Instructional Materials Development:

Periodically, we receive requests for information about instructional
materials that have been developed with support from NSF. NSF
maintains a database of abstracts of its awards. You can retrieve
information about awards for the Instructional Materials Development
Program from that database. The Instructional Materials Development
Program (IMD) supports the development of instructional materials for
use in K-12 science, mathematics, and technology programs. In the
past decade, NSF has funded more that 350 projects in the IMD Program.
These projects range in focus from elementary school to high school,
from mathematics to science, from comprehensive course to single-topic
unit, and from print-based to multimedia. Some projects in the
database are underway and have not finished the development and
evaluation process.

You can obtain a listing of 380 IMD projects from the NSF database.
To obtain information about the Principal Investigator, Institution,
and abstract for these projects do the following:
1. Access the NSF home page [www.nsf.gov]
2. Select the option for information about Grants & Awards
3. Select the option to Search Awards and click on the choice for
Awards
4. At the keyword search enter [7355], which is the code for the IMD
Program
5. You will receive a list of 380 projects that have been active since
1989.
6. You can read the abstract and other information by clicking on the
title for any project of interest, and you can repeat the process of
looking at abstract by using the left button of your mouse to move
back one page to the listing of awards.

I agree that it is tiresome to read through the entire list of
abstracts of 380 projects to find ones in which you might have an
interest. However, there is no way to narrow the search of the NSF
database to grade level of topic area. Soon, however, I will post
information about how to retrieve information from the Eisenhower
National Clearinghouse (with 8,000 citations for instructional
resources) and about a nearly completed project that provides a
database of all middle school science materials supported by NSF.

Periodically, NSF publishes a Summary of Awards for the IMD Program
The last such publication was for the Fiscal Years 1991-1994. To
obtain a copy of the Summary of Awards: Instructional Materials
Development Program (NSF 95-123) send an email request to
[pubs@nsf.gov], fax request to [703-644-4278] or phone request to [703
306-0090]. When making the request send the NSF publication number
(in this case it would be NSF 95-123), the number of copies, and your
complete mailing address.

You can find an listing of publications for the Directorate of
Education and Human Resources on our Website
{http:..www.ehr.nsf.gov/]. You also can request copies of the
publications from that site. Some can be downloaded directly; others
will be provided as paper copies.
