A VERY useful mini-conversation on scale-up! Thanks, and let's keep
it going. Here's another issue, tho, as thinking about these issues
moves on. Professional culture. It's clear from all our experiences
and a deep literature that, for classroom practice to change, teachers
need more than opportunities to attain new knowledge, skills,
dispositions, strategies, materials. For the kinds of changes our
reforms envision, teachers also need to have a supportive
professional culture in which to work, change, learn, etc. This is
often 'way beyond the reach and mindset of prpofessional deveopers,
whose mission may be to enhance knowledge and skills but, especially
those who sponsor "y'all come" institutes, summer programs, or the
like, find it impossible to impact or even consider the culture to
which the teacher returns. What are your thoughts about this? What
have you done? What are your struggles? Susan
