Issue #2: Critical Issues in Prof. Dev't

Thanks to Jim for a thoughtful response to my first "critical issue"
inquiry. Any other thoughts about equity and diversity in
professional development are welcome. I think equity is particularly
interesting when applied to pd opportunities. How do you guarantee
that all have access to your programs? That you don't appeal and
then serve only what Joyce calls the "omnivores", or the ever eager
and "ready" teachers? Or just the people who have time and resources
or lack of responsbilities like families and so can participate for
the kinds of extended periods of time good pd requires?

Now, I'd like to see if another of our critical issues is of interest
to you'all: that of scale-up. In your project, how do you think
about moving from a few participants to reaching large numbers? Are
there strategies you've used successfully? resources that have been
helpful? dilemmas that you have faced? Again, any thoughts would be
helpful.

Some of you know my project at the National Institute for Science
Education is finishing up a book on professional development for
teachers of science and mathematics. The chapter I have left to
write is on critical issues -- we've relabelled them "Ignore These at
Your Peril!" -- and I'll be writing about nine of them: equity in
professional development, building a professional culture,
leadership, capacity building for sustainability, scaling up, public
support for professional development, conscious use of standards and
frameworks, evaluation and assessment, and time for professional
development. Quite a list. I'd like to ask you for your input on
these one at a time. First, EQUITY AND DIVERSITY in professional
development. Here we mean both how professional development can
address the issues of equity around s&m teaching and learning, but
also how pd can and should be equitable and meet the needs of diverse
populations of teachers and other educators. Do you have any thoughts
on this issue? problems or challenges? ways you've addressed it?
not-to-be-missed resources, articles, other references?
I'd
like
to
hear
your
thoughts.

Thanks,
Susan
