Hi -- I've been one of those silent participants.
I'm Peggy Cowan with the Alaska Department of Education. I joined the teech
lists as a PI for a NSF Teacher Enhancement Program for Early Childhood
Education. We merged that project with the Alaska Science Consortium which
I now coordinate. I also am working with leadership development in the
context of our state content standards and our curriculum frameworks project.
The Alaska Science Consortium is a statewide science staff development
cooperative. It is sponsored by member school districts and the state
Department of Education. The staff development efforts of the Consortium
are modeled (Dennis will be happy to hear) on the Writing Project's design
in Alaska. We have always struggled with how to best provide leadership in
a state with large distances and expensive travel. This is even more
critical now that funds are so tight. We depend on teachers as both the
implementers of the Consortium's instructional practices and as the leaders
of the organization. They are the institute instructors and serve on the
board which governs the organization. The climate of increased demands on
teachers, large class sizes and increased class loads puts a pressure on
"other" responsibilities such as the consortium. I'm interested in ideas on
how to stave off these pressure's erosion of our teachers' energy for change
and leadership.
Thanks to those who have kept the conversation stimulating to date. I'll be
more of a 'vocal' participant in future exchanges.
