My name is Dennis Bartels and I am Director of the Center for Teaching and
Learning at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Until recently, I was the PI
and State Director of the South Carolina Statewide Systemic Initiative and
before that staff to the California Subject Matter Projects, including the
Writing, Science and Mathematics projects. All three of the teacher
professional development models that I've been associated with have had
teacher leadership as the primary goal or central feature. I think there
is a lot we can learn from them and many other teacher leadership models
that are emerging nationwide and I look forward to being part of the
