Beginning the Introductions

I will begin the round of introductions in the hope that others will join
me. I am Joni Falk and some of you know of me from TEECH, the project that is
hosting this discussion. I am also involved in another NSF teacher
enhancement project called TEPE (Teacher Enhancement in Pedagogy and
Ecology). This project runs year long institutes for teams of four teachers
(high school) from MA and Texas. Each team is paired with local ecologist.
The emphasis of both the summer institute and the yearlong follow-up is on
teachers engaging in their own science learning. The institute focuses on
teachers doing field work with an ecologist as a resource person. During the
year, some teacher teams have chosen to continue doing their own research,
while others have involved their students in their ecology research. Key
pedagogical elements of our program have been on teacher as learner, inquiry,
collaboration, and reflection. Our approach this year was to speak little
about constructivism, but rather to run our work in a construcvtivist way.
Likewise, we have spoken less about how to implement in the classroom, and
have put greater emphasis on teachers getting involved in conducting research
and thereby renewing their interest in their students doing so.
This summer, some teams will be planning "daughter institutes." We will
see in the design of their institutes how much of our message came through,
with our approach of doing rather than speaking about it. When we sit with
these teams, as they plan their own institutes for other teachers, our
dilemma will be balancing our desire that our ideas and model of TE is passed
down vs. promoting the teachers transforming the institute to meet their own
perspectives. Perhaps a problem every parent faces? I hope to hear from other
people as to the questions you are facing in developing teacher leadership.
