Dear PIs
I'm Susan Loucks-Horsley. I co-direct the National
Institute for Science Education's Professional Development project
and am evaluating the California SSI, which is vitally interested (as
I am, naturally) in professional development. I'd like to facilitate
a discussion of leadership development, which seem to me has lots of
issues that may be immediate for some of you and really of critical
value in the long run.
Many of your projects have leadership
components, or at minimum, a goal to develop the leadership of your
teacher (and other) participants. My question is: how do you do
that? If one of the visions of reform has everyone taking on some
leadership role, i.e., a commitment to effective science and
mathematics education for all and to doing more than teaching 30 or
150 kids in the classroom, how do we as professional developers
support teachers to be both confident and competent to do so? I like
to talk about a "leadership curriculum", a set of learning experiences
that we can design to help that happen. First, I like to ask, "what
are the skills, knowledge, and attitutes or inclinations we want to
help develop?" then, What are those learning experiences that we can
use? (Note I don't use the word workshop or presentation, since I
think the experiences can have many many different formats.) What
materials have you used? what settings? what situations have you
set up for this?
To start the ball rolling, I'll note that I've
helped compile the "Toolkit" with others from regional labs, entitled
"Facilitating Systemic Change in Science and Mathematics Education: A
Toolkit for Professional Developers", which has many of the "pieces" I
think are important. I can say more about that if people are
interested. But I always wonder how to best frame the "course of
study", what situations really work the best, how I can improve what
I do.
I hope you'll find it profitable to share some of what each of
us does; what we struggle with in trying to achieve the leadership
goal. I look forward to the conversation. Susan
