SERA Project Releases Report

AAAS has released Science Education Reform for All (SERA):
Sustaining the Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education
Reform, a companion report to the 1996 publication Science
Education Reform for All: A Look at How State Departments of
Education Are Infusing Equity and Excellence into PreK-12 Systemic
Reform. The latter report examined the policies, practices, and
strategies that state departments of education or state education
agencies (SEAs) in Florida, Michigan, and South Dakota are using
to infuse equity and excellence into their ongoing science,
mathematics, and technology (SMT) systemic education efforts. The
new report is divided into two sections: "Profiles and Lessons
Learned" summarizes the progress in SMT reform of 14 SERA schools
in Florida, Michigan, and South Dakota; and "Views from the Field,"
contains several short papers written by individuals with
first-hand experience in education reform.
Single, free copies of both reports are available from Nathan
Bell, AAAS, 1200 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20005; e-mail
nbell@aaas.org .

The American Physiological Society, as part of its Frontiers in Physiology teacher enhancement program, has developed a videotape designed to serve as a workshop or classroom tool to stimulate teachers to reflect on the strategies and materials they use in their classrooms. We developed the video to help our teams of middle/high school teachers and research physiologists include discussions of pedagogy in their local professional development workshops for teachers. But many project directors have expressed interest in using the video with their own programs...thus this posting.

The video is divided into four 15-minute segments. Each segment shows clips of inquiry-approach lessons taught in real classrooms, followed by a panel of science educators reflecting on the teaching and learning they observed in the video. Finally, the video encourages viewers to stop the video and discuss with a partner or a small group how they apply the specific teaching techniques modeled in the video in their own classrooms. A how-to-use guide and handout with discussion questions for viewers is included. Cost of the video is $18 (shipping and handling included). For more information, contact Marsha Matyas at educatio@aps.faseb.org
