You are invited to participate in a special program at NSTA that brings together
Project Directors and staff from the NSF's Local Systemic Change and Teacher
Enhancement Programs, educators from school districts participating in the
Education Development Center's (EDC) Center for Urban Science Education Reform
(CUSER), national leaders in science education reform, and NSF and EDC staff.
New Orleans Marriott in LaGalerie 3
April 3 and 4, 1997
April 3 9:00 - 10:30 Systemic Reform in Elementary Science
Judith Opert Sandler and Barbara Brauner Berns
On the basis of the latest trends and learnings from school districts throughout
the United States, leaders in the science education field will share their
findings, discuss strategies and involve participants in identifying elements
that are key factors in system-wide change.
April 3 11:00 - 12:00 Designing Professional Development Programs:
Karen Worth and Marian Pasquale
This session will focus on designing professional development programs for
systemic science education reform. The session will begin with a presentation of
a framework drawn from the work of the National Institute for Science Education
(NISE). Participants will engage in small group discussion around some of the
critical elements of program design. This will be followed by a closer look at
the need for planners of professional development programs to understand and
plan for change as audiences gain new knowledge, skills, and interests.
April 3 12:30 - 1:30 Evaluation of Local Systemic Reform
Iris Weiss and Jeanne Century
The session on evaluating systemic reform in K-8 science will focus on the core
evaluation system being used to assess the quality and impact of NSF's Local
Systemic Change projects. Participants will learn about the key evaluation
questions and the data collection strategies being used to
address them. They will also have the opportunity to use the LSC classroom
observation protocol to rate a videotaped science lesson and compare their
ratings with those of professional evaluators.
April 3 2:00 - 3:00 Student Assessment:
Mary Ellen Harmon and Marian Pasquale
Hands-on, inquiry based science requires new ways of assessing what students
know and can do. The benefits and disadvantages of different methods of
assessing student understanding will be discussed, including how to use the data
to inform instructional decisions.
April 3 3:30 - 4:30 Science Material Management:
Annabelle Shrieve
Representatives from the urban districts around the country will share their
experiences and facilitate discussions on issues related to alternative
strategies for managing and distributing science materials at the district
level.
April 4 9:00 - 10:30 The Critical Role of Lead Teachers and Resource Teachers:
Joe Flynn and Marian Pasquale
This will be an interactive session designed to explore the critical and
complicated role that school based teacher leaders play in science education
reform. Teacher leaders from around the country as well as participants will
discuss their experiences.
April 4 11:00 - 12:00 CUSER: Supporting Systemic Urban Science Education
Reform:
Judith Sandler and Karen Worth
This session is an opportunity to learn about the Center for Urban Science
Education Reform (CUSER); a collaboration of urban educators involved in
systemic science education reform.
