Jane, this has occurred once or twice over several years and 375
participants. It's been traumatic, so we take the following steps: 1) We
screen out teachers who have been to many institutes, both to spread the
benefits and to avoid institute groupies; 2) On the first day we outline
our expectations, trying to energize people and get them enthusiastic for
the summer, but also warning people who may have come for a vacation that
we expect full participation in all activities. We even tell them how much
it costs the tax fund per person, and break that down to an hourly cost for
the institute, so they know why it's important to us as PI's. 3) Off task
behaviors are handled by counseling, two warnings, and then we pack them
off home, giving them a stipend only for hours they actually attended.
Finally, I'm against blackballing a participant who has washed out. They
may have learned their lesson. I believe that people can improve! - Cary
