I am a member of the Chemistry faculty at UW-River Falls, who teaches, among
other things, a course in chemistry for elementary education majors. My
Co-PI is David Pepi, who teaches science methods in the College of Education
at UW-River Falls. 

"Hands-on, Hearts-on, Minds-on" is the theme of 3 years of 3-week science
institutes for primary (K-3) teachers in west-central Wisconsin and
east-central Minnesota school districts. Each cycle of teachers is involved
for a 2-year period. Overall, about 25 districts and 90+teachers will be
involved.  Initially each group participates in a summer WS led by David and
myself. Teachers explore and critique 6 hands-on science curricula during
the WS and field-test modules in their own schools during the following
academic year, and the PI visits each teacher for support and evaluation
during that year. The second summer the group meets to share experiences and
plan inservices which they will lead during the second academic yearfor the
other K-3 teachers in their schools.

Questions:
1. What does NSF realistically expect regarding adoption of specific science
curricula (FOSS, for example) by the participating districts, within a very
short time from the teachers' participation??  25 school districts are not
ALL in the adoption process right at this moment. Might maintaining
communications with the various districts who have not yet made their
decisions be considered part of the sustainability of the project?

2.What are some good ways to collect reliable data about the actual usage of
adopted kits/ units in classrooms over the next few years after the project
ends?  Questionnaires to teachers? Principals, Administrators? School visits?
