I am sorry I sent this before I wrote a message.

        I am the PI on a grant for training 7 th grade teachers in
microbiology. The program called for teachers to attend a five day workshop
designed to teach them microbiology and to lend them equipment for use in
their classrooms ie microscopes, a video microscope and materials and
supplies to grow microorganisms and do experiments using the microbes. All
in all it has been a good experience for teachers however there are some
problems that I think we might discuss.

        The following is a synopsis of the findings of our evaluation and
might serve as an intoduction to the difficulties of a teacher
training/equipment rental program in a big city school system.

Evaluation Summary

Teachers and Schools

Participants  Most Microlab participants did not having strong science
backgrounds and did not perceive themselves as receiving adequate
science-teaching information from peer, community or institutional
supports.

Pedagogy  The majority of science teachers involved in the survey reported
dissatisfaction with the current method of and resources for teaching
microbiology in their school-but that they have done little, if anything to
change the situation.

The Schools  The overall environment is often an obstacle to teaching
microbiology effectively. Financial constraints, and the failure of schools
to provide an collegial atmosphere, seriously limit the ability of teachers
to get information they need to teach microbiology and to share information
with one another.

The Workshop

Pedagogical Needs  Participants reported that the workshop was meeting
their need for microbiology information, creative teaching approaches and
access to needed classroom equipment.

Format and Facilitators  Participants reported satisfaction with both.

Intent to Use  Almost all participants indicated a strong intention to use
Microlab ideas and materials in their classroom.

Microlab in the Classroom

Classroom Use  Participants reports very successful use of Microlab
materials and lessons in the classroom and great student engagement.

Classroom Difficulties  Participants reported that time constraints and
equipment shortages limited their use of materials and activities in the
classroom.

Barriers to Use  the barriers identified were:  classroom management,
transportation, keeping the microbes alive, limited communication among
teachers and teacher apathy.

Strengths

The Microlab program meets teachers needs for microbiology information,
provides them with novel and creative approaches to teaching, provides
access to classroom materials, and allows for constructivist learning and
experimentation in the classroom.

Weakness

The Microlab program was not used at maximal effectiveness, was not used by
all workshop trained teachers, and was not being shared among teachers.
