Do you have public access internet available to school age children or teens
in a school or public library, or know libraries that do? If yes, please help
the Legislation Committees of the three youth divisions of American Library
Association. In light of the just passed Telecommunications Bill which
includes internet restrictions, it is clear Senators and Representatives need
education on the nature of internet, why it is not advisable for school and
public libraries to restrict access to minors, nor to put censoring software
on the workstations, and to be educated on what kids really are using internet
for in libraries. (The internet restrictions could make libraries criminally
libel for making internet available to minors where they could access
indecent material--don't panic... we expect litigation).
The form below, is designed to solicit written quotes/comments from kids up to
age 18 who use internet in libraries. They will be used in a brochure for ALA
Legislative Day to educate Senators and Representatives about the positive
value of having internet in school and public libraries and the worlds it
opens up for kids.
If each person who reads this got 2-3 great responses to the questions below
along with the other needed information AND encouraged other librarians you
know to do the same, we can do this. We are on a quick timeframe----you need
to get responses to Judy Flum no later than FEB 29! Please respond by fax

jflslz@alam1.lib.co.alameda.ca.us <jflslz@alam1.lib.co.alameda.ca.us>. Be sure to include all the requested
information for each young person's response. Feel free to print and copy the
form below. Also please be aware, ALA is sponsoring a library net day on
Tuesday April 16 so any responses you get you can also use locally to promote
your Net Day events or activities.
