TEECH "LEAVING A LEGACY: Sustaining a Project After the Funding Ends"

I am coPI with Mare Taagepera on the NSF Orange County STS Network project
(OCSTSN). This is aimed at creating viable business-industry/university
science faculty/science teacher long term relationships via curriculum
development and dissemination focus groups and mentorships. I am also PI
on a small SGER award comparing high schools teaching SS&C
(Coordinated/integrated) science at 10th grade with comparable biology
classes. We also operate a UCI Summer Science Institute that is locally
funded (15 years of offering about 10 teacher science courses each summer
at K-12 levels), and a site of the California Science Project.
Many of the questions apply to us. One new one is perhaps California based?:
How do we increase support in the community (parents and others) for a
"reformed" science education at all grade levels (K-12) when this seems
more expensive (hands-on), less objective (performance assessment vs
"right" answers on bubbles), and contrary to the "back to basics" movement
that does not consider science a "basic"? This support is especially
needed to counter opposing political forces in many school districts, and
state-wide trends.
The question also relates to teacher comfort levels. How comfortable are
they making improvements when the "public" doesn't seem to want them?
