Using forums or not

Bev's list of characteristics of feasible forums sounds about right to me. I tend not to use forums much, but list-servs more. What do I use them for? Most often I read and follow, as I do with a professional journal. Sometimes I use them to send out a general query. Very often I see the name of someone I want to make some contact with, and I strike up a side conversation.
In these lists and correspondences, there is not much of a difficulty with proprietary information, competition, etc.
Are there some segments of work life in whch it is more valuable than others to schmooze like this, for example data analyusis, or rpoposal writing, or project start-up?
